Saprobic or pathogenic on plants, human and animals. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, stromatic, usually superficial, subglobose to obpyriform, solitary or sometimes fused, black, with glabrous surface, lacking or covered with setae, ostiolate. Ostiole papillate, periphyses present or absent, with setae present irregularly over the surface. Setae unevenly flexuous, erect, thick-walled, septate, rarely branching towards the apex, brown becoming paler distally, apex rounded, verrucose or smooth, at times growing into fertile conidiophores. Peridium comprising layers of thin-walled, dark brown cells of textura angularis. Paraphyses filiform, aseptate to septate. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate, apex rounded to slightly truncate, with a refractive J- apical ring. Acospores 1-septate, cylindrical, subhyaline, with apices tapering slightly, verrucose, surrouned by a thick mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, upright, aggregated or solitary, branched or unbranched, hyaline to olivaceous brown, smooth to verrucose, thin-walled, usually 1–2-septate, bearing 3–12 conidiogenous cells at the apex. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, subcylindrical or clavate to fusiform or elongate doliiform, smooth to verrucose, hyaline to olivaceous brown, bearing conspicuous collarettes. Conidia aseptate, ellipsoidal to globose or fusiform to limoniform, smooth or verrucose, hyaline when immature, becoming olivaceous brown to dark brown at maturity, thick-walled, with both ends rounded or with a hilum at the apex (adapted from Lombard et al. 2016, Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016).

Type species: Stachybotrys chartarum (Ehrenb.) S. Hughes, Can. J. Bot. 36: 812 (1958)
