Hypocreomycetidae, Microascales, Halosphaeriaceae, Halosphaeria

Index Fungorum number: IF 2209; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02142; 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2020); 1 species with sequence data.

Saprobic on wood in marine environments. Sexual morph: Ascomata globose, subglobose, obpyriform, pale brown to black, ellipsoidal, immersed to superficial, ostiolate, papillate, coriaceous, necks variable in length, periphysate, centrum breaking up into deliquescing catenophyses. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, pedicellate, thin-walled, clavate, lacking an apical ring, deliquescing early. Ascospores biseriate, hyaline, broad-ellipsoidal, 1-septate, not constricted at the septa, with 3–4 spoon-shaped equatorial appendages and one at each end of the spore. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016).

Type species: Halosphaeria appendiculata Linder, Farlowia 1(3): 412 (1944) [1943-1944]

Notes: The genus Halosphaeria comprises H. appendiculata Linder as the type species. Other species assigned to the genus by Kohlmeyer (1972) have been transferred to other genera as the result of ultrastructural and molecular studies: Antennospora, Halosphaeriopsis, Lautisporopsis, Okeanomyces, Ondinella, and Remispora (Jones et al. 2009, 2015).
