Nigrosabulum

Nigrosabulum Malloch & Cain, Can. J. Bot. 48(10): 1822 (1970)

Hypocreomycetidae, Hypocreales, Bionectriaceae, Nigrosabulum

Index Fungorum number: IF 3507; Facesoffungi number: FoF 10889; 1 morphological species; 1 species with sequence data

Saprobic, coprophilous, on animal dung, sometimes isolated from soil. Sexual morph: Ascomata cleistothecial, astromatic, subglobose to globose, smooth, glabrous, black, lacking ostioles. Peridium carbonaceous, of two strata, outer stratum composed of dark brown, nearly isodiametric, thick-walled, pseudoparenchymatous cells; inner stratum of hyaline, thin-walled, evanescent cells. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, borne in irregularly arranged groups, subglobose to globose, evanescent, non-pedicellate. Ascospores globose, aseptate, hyaline, smooth-walled, lacking germ pores. Asexual morph: cephalosporium-like, hyphomycetous. Conidiophores arising from the mycelium, tapering, unbranched, each bearing one phialide. Conidia ellipsoidal, fusoid, ovoid or allantoid, aseptate, hyaline, aggregated in wet masses at the tip of the conidiophore (copied from Perera et al. 2023).

Type species: Nigrosabulum globosum Malloch & Cain, Can. J. Bot. 48(10): 1823 (1970)

Notes: Malloch and Cain (1970) introduced the monotypic, cleistothecial genus Nigrosabulum for N. globosum and initially placed it in Pseudeurotiaceae. There is one species in the genus and LSU DNA data are available. Nigrosabulum is more related to Mycoarachis (Bionectriaceae; reported from animal dung) and Pseudeurotium (Pseudeurotiaceae; a soil fungus) in morphology (Malloch and Cain 1970) (copied from Perera et al. 2023).
