Protocreopsis Yoshim. Doi, Kew Bull. 31(3): 551 (1977)

Hypocreomycetidae, Hypocreales, Bionectriaceae, Protocreopsis

Index Fungorum number: IF 4384; Facesoffungi number: FoF 10899; 16 morphological species; 5 species with sequence data

Saprobic on decaying monocotyledonous plant parts, mainly on wood and leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, superficial on the substrate, solitary or in groups, enclosed in a white to tan or rarely greenish hyphae, globose or subglobose, collapsing when dry, hyaline to pale yellow to pale orange or brownish-orange, KOH-, LA-, papillate or apapillate, ostiolate. Peridium > 20 μm thick, of one or two strata, composed of brick-like cells. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, sometimes evanescent, clavate to fusiform, apex simple or with an indistinct apical ring. Ascospores bi- to pluriseriate, fusiform to ellipsoid, straight or slightly curved or sigmodial, 1-septate, hyaline, usually striate, occasionally smooth-walled, punctate-striate or tuberculate, without mucilagenous appendages or sheaths. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, acremonium-like. Conidiophores monophialidic, unbranched, typically septate, smooth-walled or sometimes spinulose on phialides. Conidia ellipsoid to fusiform or oblong, aseptate, hyaline, smooth-walled, arranged in a hyaline, fluid head at the tip of phialide. (copied from Perera et al. 2023).

Type species: Protocreopsis zingibericola Yoshim. Doi, Kew Bull. 31(3): 552 (1977)

Notes: Doi (1977) introduced Protocreopsis to accommodate two nectria-like species with ascomata surrounded by a hyphal mat, thus mentioned as hypocrea-type. The genus was based on Protocreopsis zingibericola as the type (Doi 1977). The pale yellow to orangish, KOH-, LA- ascomata led to the placement in Bionectriaceae (Rossman et al. 1999). Protocreopsis species are characterized by ascomata enclosed in white to tan or greenish hyphal stroma, striate ascospores, acremonium-like asexual morphs and their monocotyledonous hosts (commonly on leaves of palms, Heliconia or Musaceae hosts) (Doi 1977; Rossman et al.1999; Lechat and Fournier 2015). The taxonomic placement of Protocreopsis in Bionectriaceae was confirmed by inference of LSU sequences (Hirooka et al. 2010; Lechat and Fournier 2015; Lechat et al. 2016b). Sixteen species are accommodated in Protocreopsis, five species with sequence data (copied from Perera et al. 2023).
