Hypocreomycetidae, Hypocreales, Bionectriaceae, Stephanonectria
Index Fungorum number: IF 28373; Facesoffungi number: FoF 10905; 1 morphological species; 1 species with sequence data
Saprobic on dead woody or herbaceous plants, or soil. Stroma superficial and minute or erumpent through the substrate. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, emerging from stroma, gregarious to crowded, superficial, brown, smooth to rough, minutely papillate, KOH-, ostiolate. Ostioles surrounded by a crown-like structure. Peridium two strata; outer stratum and the crown composed of irregular, angular to elongated, tooth-like cells; inner stratum of slightly lobed cells in surface view, oblong and flat in longitudinal section. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, clavate, apex broadly rounded, rarely flat, with a barely visible refractive ring. Ascospores 1-septate, covered with short striae. Asexual morph: Conidiomata myrothecium-like, sporodichial. Sporodichia flat to cup-shaped. Conidiophores dense, parallel. Conidiogenous cells phialidic. Conidia brownish orange, or white to pale orange en masse, arrange in chains, aseptate, ellipsoidal, symmetrical or asymmetrical, hilum slightly laterally displaced, hyaline, smooth walled (copied from Perera et al. 2023).
Type species: Stephanonectria keithii (Berk. & Broome) Schroers & Samuels, Sydowia 51(1): 116 (1999)
Notes: The monotypic genus Stephanonectria was introduced for Nectria keithii by Schroers et al. (1999a). Stephanonectria is characterized by a peculiar crown-like structure around the ascomatal ostiole and myrothecium-type asexual morph (Schroers et al. 1999a). Stephanonectria keithii has been found from dead parts of Brassica sp. and various dead woody substrata and soil (Schroers et al. 1999a) (copied from Perera et al. 2023).
