Hirsutella

Hirsutella Pat., Revue mycol., Toulouse 14(no. 54): 67 (1892)

Hypocreomycetidae, Hypocreales, Ophiocordycipitaceae, Hirsutella

Index Fungorum number: IF 8538; 83 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2020); 39 species with sequence data.

Generally pathogenic on insects, mites and nematodes. Asexual morph: Synnemata, when present, erect, cylindrical or slightly tapered, short and verrucose or long and hair-like, unbranched to marginally branched, or with several short branches at the side. Phialides generally subglobose with swollen base, necks helical or wavy, with or without warts. Conidia fusiform, aseptate to septate, surrounded by a mucus sheath or epispore finely warted. Sexual morph: possibly linked to Ophiocordyceps (adapted from Hyde et al. 2020, Reddy et al. 2020).

Type species: Hirsutella entomophila Pat., Revue mycol., Toulouse 14(no. 54): 69 (1892)

Notes: The genus was introduced for hyphomycetes pathogenic on insects, mites and nematodes (Simmons et al. 2015). The sexual morph of this genus was linked to Ophiocordyceps (Simmons et al. 2015). The genus is characterised by synnematous or mononematous conidiophores, fusiform, conidia, with a distinct chromophilic slime layer or covered by a finely warted epispore (Doassans & Patouillard 1892, Quandt et al. 2014) (notes copied from Hyde et al. 2020).
