Saprobic on decaying wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed, solitary, neck erumpent through host surface, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black. Peridium comprising an outer layer of irregular, heavily pigmented, thick-walled, pale brown to dark brown cells of textura angularis and an inner layer of flattened hyaline cells of textura angularis. Paraphyses hyaline, septate, unbranched. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, hyaline. Ascospores filiform, hyaline, aseptate, guttulate, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Luo et al. 2019).
Type species: Aquafiliformis lignicola Z.L. Luo, K.D. Hyde & H.Y. Su, in Luo et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-019-00438-1, [47] (2019)
Notes: There is a close morphological similarity between Aquafiliformis and Ceratosphaeria but the phylogenetic analysis conducted by Luo et al. (2019) showed that Aquafiliformis clusters in Magnaporthaceae, while Ceratosphaeria belongs to Ceratosphaeriaceae (new family introduced in the same study; Luo et al. 2019). Aquafiliformis is also phylogenetically close to Muraeriata (Luo et al. 2019). However, Aquafiliformis differs from Muraeriata species in terms of the ascoma, ascomatal wall and ascospore morphology (Huhndorf et al. 2008, Luo et al. 2019).
