Meliola

Meliola Fr., Syst. orb. veg. (Lundae) 1: 111 (1825)

Sordariomycetidae, Meliolales, Meliolaceae, Meliola

Index Fungorum number: IF 3100; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00740; 1694 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2020, Zeng et al. 2017); 20 species with sequence data.

Epiphytic on the stems, surface of leaves or branches. Superficial hyphae septate, darker at the septa, branched, brown, with hyphopodia, hyphal setae existent. Hyphopodia near to hyphal septa, capitate, alternate or opposite on hyphae, 2-celled, brown. Hyphal setae arising from hyphae, developing around the base of the ascomata in some species, straight or curly, rounded or acute at the apex, or branches, septate or aseptate, brown to dark brown, smooth-walled. Sexual morph: Ascomata globose to subglobose, superficial on the surface of hosts, solitary to gregarious on superficial hyphae, thick-walled, ascomatal setae and appendages absent, surface of ascomata verrucose. Peridium comprising dark brown cells of textura angularis when viewed in squash mounts, with two layers, outer stratum thick-walled, made up of dark brown cells of irregular textura angularis, and inner layer comprising flattened, hyaline cells. Paraphyses evanescent. Asci unitunicate, 2–4-spored, broadly clavate to oblong, evanescent. Ascospores 2–4-seriate, hyaline to brown, oblong to broadly cylindrical, with rounded ends, 3–4-septate, constricted and darker at the septa, smooth-walled, verrucose when immature. Asexual morph: Phialides alternate or opposite on hyphae, ampuliform, sometimes curved, pale brown to brown. Conidia hyaline (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2015).

Type species: Meliola nidulans (Schwein.) Cooke, Grevillea 11(no. 57): 37 (1882)

Notes: Meliola is the largest genus in Meliolaceae, which comprises more than 70% of species in the family. Members of this genus typically have hyphal setae and globose ascomata. Meliola telosmae is illustrated in this entry. Meliola telosmae differs from M. clerodendricola in having longer appressoria and setae, and thinner, light brown ascospores. Hyde et al. (2020) provided a reference specimen of M. telosmae with sequence data (part of the notes copied and another part adapted from Hyde et al. 2020).
