Index Fungorum number: IF 558734; Facesoffungi number: FoF 10215; 1 morphological species; 1 species with sequence data

Saprobic on dead bamboo branches. Sexual morph: Ascomata visible as black spots on substrate, immersed, aggregated to solitary, globose to subglobose in cross-section with a flattened base. Ostioles located at the center, covered with a black, thick clypeus, pointed at apex, inverted funnel-shaped, periphysate, filled with hyaline, amorphous cells. Ascomatal walls 2-layered; outer layer thick, made up of brown to dark brown, thick-walled cells of textura angularis; inner layer comprising thin-walled, hyaline cells of textura angularis. Paraphyses abundant, embedded in a gelatinous matrix, hyaline, filamentous, long, septate, constricted at the septa, sinuous, guttulate. Asci unitunicate, 8-spored, cylindrical, sessile to short-pedicellate, rounded at the apex, comprising an inverted, hat-shaped, discoid, J+ apical ring. Ascospores uniseriate, oblong to broadly ellipsoidal, brown to dark brown, pointed at the upper end, basal end blunt, guttulate, comprising a thick gelatinous sheath, germ slit spanning entire spore length, on ventral side, straight. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Samarakoon et al. 2022).

Type species: Magnostiolata mucida Samarak. & K.D. Hyde, in Samarakoon, Hyde, Maharachchikumbura, Stadler, Gareth Jones, Promputtha, Suwannarach, Camporesi, Bulgakov & Liu, Fungal Diversity 112: 65 (2022)

Notes: Magnostiolata possesses immersed ascomata under a black clypeus, unitunicate asci with a J+ apical ring, and brown, ellipsoid ascospores with a germ slit, which is similar to anthostomella-like taxa. Several anthostomella-like taxa were discovered during the study conducted by Samarakoon et al. (2022). Magnostiolata differs as it has funnel-shaped ostiolar canals, filled with amorphous cells and ascospores covered with a wing-shaped mucilaginous sheath. Since the Anthostomella generic type has not been sequenced, Samarakoon et al. (2022) followed morphological comparison to introduce their new collection as a new genus. However, with the available sequence data, the multigene phylogeny conducted by Samarakoon et al. (2022) also reveals that their new specimen clusters distinctly within the Anthostomella clades with poor statistical support (notes taken from Samarakoon et al. 2022).
