Coniocessia

Coniocessia Dania García, Stchigel, D. Hawksw. & Guarro, in García, Stchigel, Cano, Calduch, Hawksworth & Guarro, Mycol. Res. 110(11): 1284 (2006)

Xylariomycetidae, Xylariales, Coniocessiaceae, Coniocessia

Index Fungorum number: IF 29049; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01297; 5 species with sequence data.

Saprobic on grasses, soil and dung. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, glabrous or pilose, subglobose to pyriform, ostiolate. Stroma absent. Peridium coriaceous to pseudoparenchymatous; outer layer with textura intricata. Asci cylindrical to subcylindrical, without an apical ring. Hamathecium paraphysate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, dark brown, smooth-walled, one-celled, with a longitudinal germ-slit. Asexual morph: Conidiophores branched; conidiogenous cells discrete, integrate, terminal, polyblastic, denticulate; conidia smooth-walled or slightly verruculose, subglobose to pyriform, apiculate at the base (adapted from García et al. (2006).

Type species: Coniocessia nodulisporioides (D. Hawksw.) Dania García, Stchigel, D. Hawksw. & Guarro, in García, Stchigel, Cano, Calduch, Hawksworth & Guarro, Mycol. Res. 110(11): 1285 (2006)

Notes: García et al. (2006) introduced Coniocessia to accommodate C. nodulisporioides, by synonymising Coniochaeta nodulisporioides, isolated from soil in Jordan by Hawksworth (1978). The species was synonymised under Coniocessia, based on morphology and SSU and LSU molecular data. Asgari & Zare (2011) introduced Coniocessiaceae and four new species in Coniocessia based on morphological and ITS and LSU molecular data, as all species clustered into a single monophyletic clade (Asgari & Zare 2011). Maharachchikumbura et al. (2016) provided an updated outline of the genus with five species.
