Bartalinia Tassi, Bulletin Labor. Orto Bot. de R. Univ. Siena 3: 4 (1900)

Xylariomycetidae, Amphisphaeriales, Sporocadaceae, Bartalinia

Index Fungorum number: IF 7327; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00659; 21 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2020); 7 species with sequence data.

Saprobic or endophytic on plants. Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Conidiomata brown to black , pycnidial or moveable, solitary to gregarious, subepidermal, erumpent at maturity, globose, unilocular. Conidiomata wall composed of two layers, outer layer comprising dark brown to black cells of textura angularis, inner wall comprising thin, hyaline cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, ampulliform, holoblastic, discrete, determinate, forming from the inner layer of the pycnidium wall. Conidia hyaline to pale brown, subcylindrical, trans-septate, with appendages, basal cell with truncate base, obconic, hyaline, with single and unbranched appendage; 3 median cells subcylindrical, hyaline to pale brown, apical cell conical, almost hyaline, with three branched appendage (adapted from Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016).

Type species: Bartalinia robillardoides Tassi, Bulletin Labor. Orto Bot. de R. Univ. Siena 3: 145 (1900)

Notes: Bartalinia was established by Tassi (1990) and is characterized by 3–4-septate conidia (Nag Raj 1993). They have a worldwide distribution, occurring as saprobes on various shrubs and trees and are often associated with leaf spots (Wong et al. 2003, Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016, Wijayawardene et al. 2017, Phookamsak et al. 2019, Farr & Rossman 2019). They have also been recorded in freshwater (Nguyen et al. 2019). The genus was previously placed in Bartaliniaceae by Senanayake et al. (2015) which was later synonymized under Sporocadaceae by Jaklitsch et al. (2016).
