Colonies epiphyllous or hypophyllous, regularly confluent. Hyphae superficial, brown, straight to flexuous, septate, branched, reticulate, with hyphopodia. Hyphopodia alternate to unilateral, mostly 2-celled, brown, with capitates head cells and irregular lobes, stalk cells rarely septate. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, globose to subglobose, verrucose. Peridium thick, composed of black, verrucose outer stratum, and brown inner stratum of textura angularis. Asci 4–8-spored, unitunicate, subcylindrical to ovoid, or clavate, with ascus wall attenuated or broken when mature. Ascospores ellipsoidal to oblong, 1-septate, not constricted at the septum, hyaline when young, becoming brown at maturity. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016).

Notes: Upon its introduction, Armatella was placed in Polystigmellaceae (Dothideales) (Theissen & Sydow 1915). It was later transferred to Meliolaceae (Hansford 1946). Hosagoudar (2003) then included this single genus in the newly introduced family Armatellaceae. This was followed in Hongsanan et al. (2015) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2018).
